Hanal Pixan: The Heart of Mayan Day of the Dead

Food for the souls, the earth oven, and the family in Coba who cooks it with us each November.

Hanal Pixan: The Heart of Mayan Day of the Dead

Hanal Pixan means food for the souls. It is the Yucatan's own Day of the Dead, and it lasts longer than a single evening.

In Coba we cook with the Ku Canul family, using the pib, the earth oven, to steam tamales wrapped in banana leaf. The altar comes next, built with marigold, fruit and the dishes the departed loved one preferred.

There is no performance in it. You are helping a family prepare, and then you eat together.

It is the one tour we run because the calendar says so. If you want it, come in the right week.
